Choosing the Right Dentist

By Arthur Kezian
The state licensing board requires some minimum practice standards from any dentist to ensure quality oral care for all consumers. This means every dentist is qualified to continue their practice. But, it is important to find a dentist that is not only qualified but is also good at what he or she does.
Good Patient Relations
B2

A dentist needs to exercise good patient relations to enjoy further services from his customers. When you feel comfortable and at ease with a dentist, you would not mind paying the higher dental fees; you will feel confident of the dentist’s skills and knowledge if he has excellent ‘bedside manners’. Not every consumer likes visiting the dentist; even for the routine oral hygiene like washing and cleaning. Hence, if a dentist practices stellar patient relations, he would have a loyal patron in his book.

His professional manners towards his patient would win more to his practice.
Qualifications
Qualified dentists must have undergone the proper academic and practical training to be fully equipped with the skills and methods on dental care and treatment. They should also be innovative in keeping up with the latest dental technology and methods so that he can recommend the better dental services to his patients.
A qualified dentist will always keep his dental knowledge updated and relevant so that he can advise his patients on the latest and better dental treatment and oral hygiene.
B1

Availability

A good dentist must be available to serve his patients the best he can. He must be able to adjust his time to serve his patients the best he can; even if it meant being an emergency dentist at times.
Reasonable fees
A good  dentist that is favorable to consumers would be one that charges reasonable fees. Although most clients would be of some high social status and dental charges should not be a concern, it is still assuring to note that a good dentist would charge only what is relevant or as per market prices. Overcharging a customer or asking for exorbitant prices would only reflect badly on the dentist as mercenary and not professional.
Dental Treatment
Another criterion in choosing the best dentist is the forms of dental treatment he practices. An excellent dentist would be open to various types of dental treatment instead of insisting only one or two types. Such a narrow minded approach only limits the potential of the dentist. So, before you choose a dentist, make sure he or she follows some of the criteria mentioned here.
